& Historical Tours
Just north of Sea Trail in the port city
of Wilmington, discover the charm of this Southern treasure. Walking and
carriage tours of the historic district are available. Experience
cobblestone and brick
streets, live oaks and historic landmarks such as the Battleship, the
Bellamy Mansion and the Latimer House dating back to the mid 1800's.
The Battleship North Carolina also located in Wilmington, is open for
tours. This 'Showboat' was the most decorated battleship of World War
II. Much of the ship's nine decks are open to the public. On self-guided
tours, you can enter gun turrets, inspect the bridge, view the crew's
quarters and tour the engine room.
Orton Plantation, situated on the Cape Fear River near Southport, just
30 miles north of Sea Trail, was built in 1725. Self-guided tours of the
20-acre gardens are available and take approximately 1 hour.
Fort Fisher Civil War Museum - Take a short drive to Southport and catch
the ferry over to Fort Fisher. Stroll the beach trails and see the
remains of this fort that kept the Cape Fear River and the port of
Wilmington open to blockade runners. The fort fell on January 15, 1865.
Admission is free.
Brookgreen Gardens - South of Sea Trail, near Myrtle Beach, visit the
beautifully landscaped gardens and more than 2,000 species and
subspecies of plants native to the Southeastern United States. Also, the
largest outdoor display of American figurative sculpture in the world --
more than 550 works by over 300 artists --
can be enjoyed in every season.
