The Willard Byrd course at Sea Trail Golf Resort will close for a multi-million dollar renovation and revitalization beginning on May 13, 2024. The extensive renovation project is spearheaded by golf course architect, Tim Cate.

Tim Cate is well-known for producing several of the most admired golf communities in the Southeastern United States and has over 35 years of experience. His projects are “developed through a relationship-driven design process,” and known for its “Aesthetic and functional excellence that works in harmony with the natural surroundings and habitats.”

The Sea Trail Golf Resort ownership and management team in partnership with Tim Cate have designed a renovation plan that will elevate the Byrd course to new heights of excellence. From enhancing course layout and aesthetics to implementing state-of-the-art irrigation technology, every aspect of the renovation has been carefully crafted to deliver an unparalleled golfing experience come this fall. Here are some of the renovations taking place this summer:

  1. Brand-new expanded TifEagle Bermuda Greens — TifEagle Bermuda grass is proven to be a premier putting surface for world class golf clubs on the Carolina Coast. Known for its fine texture, resistance to disease, and high drought tolerance, it will provide the Byrd Course with increased consistency and putting speeds.
  2. Bunkers will be renovated with the “Better Billy Bunker” system. — Known as the “Best Bunker Construction Method in the World,” the new system will provide excellent playing conditions even after heavy rainfall.
  3. The bunker edges will feature Zoysia grass, a warm-season grass known for its ability to withstand foot traffic, drought, and heat.
  4. Select Teeing areas will be leveled and expanded.
  5. Tree removal —  The trees along the Byrd course are being removed to prevent disease on the course and infrastructure damage. Overgrown trees have roots that can clog drainage systems, wreck irrigation systems, mowers, and other equipment, and buckle cart paths or tee boxes.
  6. New & Improved Waste Bunkers
  7. Repairment of Cart Paths & Replacement of All Bridges
  8. Expanded and Revitalized Fairways
  9. A Brand New State-of-the-Art Irrigation System with New Controllers
  10. Renovated On-Course Restroom Facilities, Hydration Stations, and Landscape Beautification Throughout
  11. All New Directional Signage, Bunker Rakes, Flagsticks, Flags, Cups, In-Ground Trash Cans & Tee Markers

The renovations listed above will go beyond enhancing the golfer’s experience at Sea Trail Golf Resort and also add immense value for the entire surrounding community. As a hub for recreation and social interaction, the revitalized course promises to enrich the lives of residents and visitors alike, fostering a sense of belonging and pride. We are so excited to embark on this journey and can’t wait to welcome members and guests to the newly renovated Byrd Course in the Fall of 2024.

Sea Trail Golf Resort would like to remind residents and guests that during the renovation of the Byrd Course, walking on and entering the golf course is strictly prohibited and considered trespassing. For everyone’s safety, it is essential that individuals refrain from interfering with the renovation process, including disrupting workers and removing tape or materials.
